Urban stormwater is severely polluted and poses one of the greatest risks to our water resources. In this presentation, we will discuss two specific challenges we are currently facing in urban stormwater: (1) the dissolved polar organic compounds left untouched by conventional low impact development (LID) and (2) some of the threats posed by tire wear particles (TWPs) in our environment. We will discuss the scope of the problem, potential solutions, and ongoing and future research attempting to help mitigate these pressures on our environment.

Continuing Education Credits:  This forum will provide 1 PDH (professional development hour) credit upon completion of registration and evaluations that will be sent with the final event information. Each professional must determine if the content is relevant to his/her individual practice and suitable for his/her continuing education.

Bring a Friend Along to the NCWRA Luncheon for only $5! (with the purchase of a regular member luncheon forum admission fee)
Is there a young professional who has recently arrived on the scene at your company or co-worker that is new to North Carolina? Are you looking for quality, affordable, PDHs?  Is there someone at your workplace interested in meeting others in the water resources field, learning about what’s happening in water resources research, policy and implementation?  If so, then we encourage members to bring a friend to the next NCWRA luncheon. We are looking for “fresh faces” to benefit from the valuable, yet affordable, professional development and networking opportunities that our state chapter of the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) has to offer.

Guest Speaker: Tarek N. Aziz, Associate Professor, North Carolina State University Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Tarek N. Aziz

Tarek Aziz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering.  His research interests have focused on nature-based processes to improve water quality. Tarek has studied photochemical processes in constructed wetlands to remove emerging contaminants, examined the impact of mixing on harmful algal blooms, and used fungal bioremediation to remove contaminants from stormwater. His work integrates principles from various disciplines, and he pursues collaborations with colleagues to expand the reach of my research into new domains. On a personal note, Tarek loves reading, playing games and music with his friends and family, and travel.
