Description: North Carolina's coastal communities face a growing threat from chronic floods, where tides now reach higher and higher due to sea-level rise, flowing into streets and sidewalks. These floods will only worsen with continued sea-level rise. Yet, the incidence of chronic floods is poorly documented, as are the impacts of these floods on individuals and communities. This presentation will summarize ongoing efforts to measure the incidence and impacts of chronic flooding in North Carolina, including potential public health risks associated with hazardous water quality.
Speakers: Dr. Katherine Anarde and Dr. Natalie Nelson

Dr. Katherine Anarde is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at NC State University. She is a coastal engineer and geomorphologist that combines observational and numerical approaches to investigate coastal hazards. Anarde’s research is largely interdisciplinary and focuses on climate change impacts to coastal communities. This body of work includes projects investigating the frequency of flooding in coastal communities, why these floods are occurring, household level impacts, and potential solutions to mitigate flooding.

Dr. Natalie Nelson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at NC State University, and a Faculty Fellow with the Center for Geospatial Analytics. She leads a team of researchers that characterizes and models nonpoint source pollution in coastal and inland surface waters, and takes a watershed-scale approach to studying where and why nonpoint source pollution occurs.
Continuing Education Credits: This forum will provide 1 PDH (professional development hour) credit upon completion of registration and online evaluation that will be sent with the final event information. Each professional must determine if the content is relevant to his/her individual practice and suitable for his/her continuing education.
Bring a Friend Along to the NCWRA Luncheon! (with the purchase of a regular member luncheon forum admission fee)
Is there a young professional who has recently arrived on the scene at your company or co-worker that is new to North Carolina? Are you looking for quality, affordable, PDHs? Is there someone at your workplace interested in meeting others in the water resources field, learning about what’s happening in water resources research, policy and implementation? If so, then we encourage members to bring a friend to the next NCWRA luncheon. We are looking for “fresh faces” to benefit from the valuable, yet affordable, professional development and networking opportunities that our state chapter of the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) has to offer.
